Tax incentive draws potential homeowners to Riverside County

Laws allow seniors to transfer lower prior tax base to new home

Three years ago, Ed McKenna and his wife moved from their Palos Verdes Estates home of 46 years to retire at Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert.

Their new yearly property tax bill was six times greater than when they lived on the California coast. McKenna wishes he could have applied for a claim under Proposition 90, a property tax benefit for homeowners ages 55 and older. He could have saved a possible $10,000 on his bill, he said.

The law was reinstated Sept. 19, 2013, in Riverside County, too late for McKenna to apply. But he now serves on Indian Ridge’s membership marketing committee and hopes other senior buyers from out of town might try.
