The stunning hillside estate once owned by Joseph Wambaugh, a best-selling novelist famous for his police work stories, was listed about a year ago for $12 million.

The 1993 gated home of simple glamour in Thunderbird Heights boasts views of Rancho Mirage and the desert stretching into the mountain horizon.

Those views have awed curious buyers, said HOM Sotheby’s agent Carl Blea during a tour of the home. But not enough to secure a deal. Over the last few months, Blea gradually cut the price down to $4.2 million. It’s a bargain for the value: The most recent owner, says Blea, invested $10 million into an elegant casita with a 20-foot waterfall, putting green and wide patio.
